Skirmish Campaign: Stranded Sherman Part 1

After the successful mission in the mountains bordering the Ponte della Morte  valley, Lt Hughes of the 91st Recon moved his men down the valley following the reports of a stranded American tank at the village outskirts. Before they could get off the mountain however, they were ambushed by the angered German sniper whose patrol had been so easily defeated.

The map shows the location of the ambush, hex 5-5. The stranded tank is located in hex 4-4.

Grey chips were distributed across the playing area. When a figure encountered a chip, I would roll to see if the sniper shot, and then resolve the roll. True to his performance in the previous battle, no shots connected and the men crossed the mountain forest with no issue.

  1. Intriguing game - I am always fascinated by games where the enemy requires no figures on the table. Snipers are ideal for this. A scenario book I have for the PTO has one of a medic trying to reach wounded marines, while Japanese artillery lands all around them.

What qualified as encountering a chip in your game?

    1. When a figure came within 6 inches of a chip I considered it encountered. I would roll a d6.

On a 1, I removed the chip and rolled for the next closest.
On a 2, I removed the chip but placed another d20 inches away in a random direction.
On a 3, I simply removed the chip
      on a 4 or 5, a shot was taken
on a 6, a shot was taken and a new chip was placed d20 inches away in a random direction
